OP12 Low Voltage Competent Person Course

Course Membership:
The course is designed for those persons who will be entering an electrical environment and be required to receive a Permit to Work and Limitation of Access to carry out work on dead and isolated equipment, carry out necessary testing for circuit condition or working adjacent to live equipment utilising the LV safety rules. In addition, the Person may be required to be the Person-in-Charge (PIC) of a Working Party under the Safety Document.
Prerequisites:
Delegates should be experienced electrical operators familiar with Live and Dead Working techniques and should be experienced in the use of test equipment for proving Live, Dead and phase rotation.
Course Objectives:
By the end of the course delegates will be able to:
Identify Company Operational Safety Rules relative to work on Low Voltage Systems including appropriate Approved Procedures as a Competent Person in receipt of a Low Voltage Safety Document
Demonstrate the Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedure and explain the responsibilities of the Authorised Person and the Competent Person in ensuring that the Apparatus to be worked on is safe from the LV System
Explain duties and responsibilities of Senior Authorised Persons, Competent Persons and Instructed Persons when issuing, receiving, and cancelling Safety Documents as the document holder
Identify the safety requirements to be established prior to the issue of a Low Voltage Permit-to-Work/Limitation-of-Access, including Isolation requirements for work on LV Systems
Through practical examples, determine the safety precautions required and apply procedures for working on equipment made Dead using a PTW
Through practical examples, demonstrate an understanding and ability to apply the necessary precautions when undertaking Live working activities, identified as acceptable within the Low Voltage safety rules
Delivery Methods:
Delegates will understand the hazards associated with electrical installations by using practical exercises to provide a realistic approach to achieving competence.
Assessments/Observations will be used throughout the course to determine the competence levels and then also by final assessment at the end of the course.
